Hector "Hermes" Serrano

Brother Hector “Hermes” Serrano was born August 9, 1999 in Mexicali, Baja California to his father Héctor Manuel Serrano and mother Vanessa Serrano. Since then has impacted so many families, friends, and strangers with his joyful and inquisitive personality. He was intelligent, witty, full of humor, and loved by all who met him. He was a multi-talented individual, skilled at playing the Guitar, Piano, Bass, as well as having masterful puzzle solving skills and giving the biggest hugs imaginable. He first attended the University of California, Santa Barbara Fall of 2017, and that academic year he joined the Oh So StunninG Sigma Gamma Chapter on April 22nd, 2018. Hector was just 22 years old and recently graduated at the end of 2021 with his Bachelors of Arts in Economics.

Though Hector earned a degree in economics, he always questioned what he wanted to do with it; always looking for more answers. Hector would often approach friends and engage in a deep discourse about the universe, existence, or the inner workings of life, religion, love, etc., and it was these conversations that helped us connect more deeply with him. It was one of his defining characteristics, as everyone can remember having at least one of these conversations with him. Hector was also well known for his full-hearted generosity. Whether a best friend or a stranger, if you were asleep in a chair, he’d offer you a bed. If you were cold, he’d offer you a blanket. If you had no money for food, he would pay for your meal. Countless people have felt the warmth of his kindness. Hector would focus on the most minute of details, and would easily pick up when something was off in a room. This held true most amongst his line brothers, where he often served as the glue holding them together, acutely aware of when there was discord amongst them and what it would take to raise everyone’s spirits. Hector lived his life by following the words of one of his favorite quotes: “Your attitude, not aptitude, will determine your altitude.”

Hector will be loved and remembered by everyone he interacted with, and will continue to motivate those who were lucky enough to form a connection with him. He is survived by his mother and father, as well as younger sister Valeria, his two younger brothers Yahir and Daniel, and his countless brothers at the Sigma Gamma Chapter, and around the world.
